The New York Public Library audio and moving image preservation program safeguards the audio, video, and film research collection holdings through physical treatment and reformatting, and enables researchers to explore the content of the Library’s rich collections. In response to a recent Mellon-funded assessment, the Library is moving forward with an ambitious plan to digitize and preserve its critically at-risk media holdings over the next several years. Both in-house and vendor programs are dramatically growing to accommodate the strategic priority. See also and by media).

The program is designed to meet international preservation reformatting guidelines and best practices. Labs are professionally equipped to accommodate the preservation and reformatting needs of a wide range of current and obsolete formats, producing digital preservation masters, requisite metadata and related documentation. The program also manages vendor projects, and participates related activities such as appraisal, format identification and assessment, disaster response and recovery, outreach, and exhibitions. Program staff work closely with Digital Preservation, Special Formats Processing, Archival Processing, Metadata Services, the Registrar’s Office, the technology teams, and curatorial/collection staff.

The Assistant Manager for Audio and Moving Image Preservation reports to the Manager for Preservation Reformatting and Field Services within the Special Collections department. The position is responsible for daily lab operations, staff oversight, project management, and quality control for both vendor and in-house work. The position will play a key role in the development of the preservation program, specifications, tools and software, and infrastructure expansion.

Primary activities will be performed at the audio and moving image sites at the Library for Performing Arts in Manhattan and the Library Services Center in Long Island City, Queens. Travel to all NYPL Research Library sites is required, as is participation in disaster response and recovery activities.

*Principal Responsibilities:*
Under the direction of the Manager for Preservation Reformatting and Field Services, the Assistant Manager is:

   - Responsible for daily staff supervision, development, goal setting,
   and evaluation.
   - Responsible for daily in-house labs operations, production oversight,
   quality assurance, and quality control.
   - Responsible for pre- and post-digitization activities such as physical
   logistics, metadata preparation, file packaging, quality control, and media
   ingest activities. Key participant in development of software, scripts and

   - Participates in oversight and tracking of audio and moving image
   preservation projects and workflow across in-house and vendor labs,
   curatorial units, and cataloging/processing units.

   projects, and grants development.
   - Participates in collection, creation, and analysis of statistics,
   reports, and documentation.
   - Stays abreast of emerging best practices, formats, specifications, and
   technology, and maintains memberships in related organizations such as
   IASA, AES, and AMIA.
   - Leads disaster response for a/mi collections and participates in the
   Library’s broader disaster preparedness, response, and recovery programs.
   - Participates in education and outreach programs.
   - Performs other duties as assigned.

*Managerial/ Supervisory Responsibilities:*

   - This position will supervise, train, and evaluate 7 current full- and
   part-time staff and participate in hiring.
   - This position may also hire, train, supervise, and evaluate part-time,
   student, or other temporary support staff.
   - Establishes goals and performance expectations, evaluates staff work,
   and provides guidance as necessary to promote success of both the
   individual and the program.
   - Evaluates in-house and vendor preservation reformatting performance
   (quality control, timely completion of work products, etc.). Recommends and
   carries out responses to issues.
   - Determines appropriate evaluation criteria and implementation of best
   practices for the effective preservation and access of audio and moving
   image media collections.

*Minimum Qualifications:*

   - Master’s degree with preferred specialization in audio and moving
   image preservation, information science, or related discipline plus
   experience in audio and moving image preservation, reformatting
   technologies, and media quality control workflows.
   - Minimum two years supervisory experience.
   - Minimum two years professional experience managing or coordinating
   media preservation projects and production, with demonstrated success.
   - Demonstrated experience evaluating effectiveness of workflows and
   assessing quality of work.
   - Experience using and evaluating tools and systems used in media
   - Broad knowledge and experience with audio, video, and film
   reformatting technologies.
   - Critical viewing and listening skills. Familiarity audio and moving
   image metering and analysis and quality control tools.
   - Working understanding of the audio preservation standards and best
   practice documents of organizations such as IASA and AES. Understanding of
   the best practices for film and video preservation, including work
   promulgated through professional organizations such as AMIA.
   - Knowledge of general preservation and access issues in large cultural

*Preferred Qualifications:*

   - Demonstrated skill with technologies as applied to the efficient
   management of preservation and reformatting workflow and production
   - Experience applying best practices in an institutional setting.
   - Experience with automated or manual audio and moving image file-based
   quality control, and checksum creation and validation; MediaInfo or other
   file analysis tools; BagIt format; command-line scripting; transcoding
   software packages; and professional audio and moving image media editing
   - Experience with database design and management, digital asset
   management, and/or digital repository systems.

*Physical Duties:*
Travel to all NYPL sites is required as necessary. Position involves some lifting and exposure to dust and mold. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
