NLS Operations Alert

No. 16-91

DATE          :    October 13, 2016

TO                :    Network Libraries

FROM         :    Vickie Collins, Head, Network Services Section

SUBJECT   :    NLS orientations 2017

Network library staff may now register for one of three 2017 orientation programs. The three-day events, held in Washington, DC, provide a comprehensive overview of NLS procedures and policies and give participants the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of NLS operations and services, to interact with NLS staff, and to work with colleagues from around the network. NLS is also offering an equipment inspection/repair workshop following each orientation session.

The 2017 orientation schedule is:

March 7–9, Tuesday–Thursday (plus Friday, March 10, for the equipment inspection/repair workshop)

June 13–15, Tuesday–Thursday (plus Friday, June 16, for the equipment inspection/repair workshop)

October 17–19, Tuesday–Thursday (plus Friday, October 20, for the equipment inspection/repair workshop)

Representatives from all of the NLS divisions, sections, and offices will brief participants on NLS functions and answer questions. Each participant may choose two one-hour Experience NLS sessions on topics such as accessing the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) site, BARD administration, book selection for the national collection, and the Patron Information and Machine Management System (PIMMS). Participants will also have a professional tour of the Library of Congress buildings on Capitol Hill.

A sample agenda is available at www.loc.gov/nls/nlm/4_6_OrientationSchedule.html. Participants are expected to attend the entire program.

The 2011 Revised Standards and Guidelines of Service (Standard 11.10), published by the American Library Association, endorses sending appropriate staff members who have completed at least six months on the job to an NLS orientation.

Registration deadlines are January 7 (first session), April 18 (second session), and August 22 (third session). To register, please contact Vickie Collins at (202) 707-9301 or vcol@loc.gov.
