NLS Operations Alert

No. 16-87

DATE          :    October 1, 2016

TO                :    Network Libraries

FROM         :    Meredith Beckhardt, Head, Reference Section

SUBJECT   :    FY 2016 annual readership and circulation reports

Annual readership and circulation reports for fiscal year 2016 (October 1, 2015, to September 30, 2016) are due. All regional libraries, subregional libraries, and advisory and outreach centers must submit reports by October 14, 2016, via the network library database at https://nls.us.baesystems.com/pls/apex/picp/f?p=112.

After logging into the database, make sure all your organizational information is up to date using the “Update library information (can occur anytime)” link. This information is used by NLS book distributors, Find a Library, NLS publications, and phone and email routing systems, so please make sure that it is as accurate and complete as possible.

When entering readership information, remember that NLS considers an active reader or an active deposit collection to be an account that has circulated at least one item in the last twelve months.

When entering circulation information, please be aware that NLS is gathering information about the circulation of titles by book number. Braille books should be counted by book number, not by volume. Digital talking books should be counted by book number, not by digital cartridge.

After processing your readership and circulation information, check the final Web screens for the full fiscal year (October 1, 2015, to September 30, 2016) to ensure that surveys for both readership and circulation have been accepted into the database. Print a copy of the final submission to keep for your records.

Please see the attached guide, Entering Readership and Circulation Statistics in the

NLS Network Library Database, for detailed instructions on how to log in and use the database interface.
