For which name of the person to use, see RDA 6.27.1.7. It is appropriate to use Fethullah Gulen because it is the identify being used most frequently in resources embodying these works, and it also happens to be the name being used on the most recent resources. So either way you get the same answer-use Fethullah Gulen.

Since none of the works you have listed would use M. Abdulfettah Sahin, you should not create a new NAR. You can add it as a 400 on the existing NAR for Fethullah Gulen, and if a cataloger in the future determine that there is a work that is consistently associated with the M. Abdulfettah Sahin identity, then that cataloger can create a new NAR and update the old one. This is covered in A1.1 LC/PCC Practice for creating NARs for persons who use pseudonyms available here: http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/naco/index.html

Subject: [PCCLIST] Author using real name and pseudonym on the same work

Dear Collective Wisdom,

I have a situation with an author using his real name and a pseudonym on different editions of the same works, and I am not sure what to do. Fethullah Gulen is established on ARN 4185036. Gulen also writes under what I believe is a pseudonym, M. Abdulfettah Sahin. I was going to create a new authority record for Sahin (with Gulen as a 500 field) when I noticed that authorized access point (author/title) records have already been created for the English translations of two of the works that I have using Fethullah Gulen as the author's name in the authority records. All of the works I have by M. Abdulfettah Sahin are from the early 1990s. From looking at these author/title authority records and bibliographic records on OCLC, it appears that Gulen used his real name (Fethullah Gulen) on later editions of these same works.

The works that I have that are using M. Abdulfettah Sahin on the title page and everywhere else in the piece are:

* Asrin getirdigi tereddutler (the volumes in the edition I have were published 1991-1994). There is an authorized access point established for the English expression of this work using Gulen as the author (ARN 5288089). There are also bib records for this work with Gulen in the statement of responsibility.

* Inancin golgesinde (the volumes in the edition I have were published 1993-1994). There is an authorized access point established for the English expression of this work using Gulen as the author (ARN 5288088). There are also bib records for this work with Gulen in the statement of responsibility.

* Cag ve nesil (the volumes in the edition I have were published 1993-1994). There is no authorized access point created for this work, but there are bib records with the statement of responsibility using Fethullah Gulen.

* Olcu veya yoldaki isiklar (the volumes in the edition I have were published 1992-1993). There is no authorized access point record created for this work, but there are bib records with the statement of responsibility using Fethullah Gulen.

So, what should be done in this situation? Should I just add M. Abdulfettah Sahin as a variant access point (400 field) to the authority record for Gulen? Or, should I create a new authority record for Sahin as a separate identity? If I create a new record for Sahin, what needs to be done with the author/title authority records already created for the English expressions? I should mention, I really didn't plan on doing any authority work for these books (it is just that the Gulen name versus the Sahin name was becoming a problem). We are outsourcing the cataloging of these books, because none of our catalogers (including myself) reads Turkish.

Thanks in advance!
Ann
