Thanks, Richard. I have been bothered by changes to authorized access points, so got onto my soap box too quickly. I also realize that it is possible that catalogers adding dates to names without conflicts in the LCNAF may be finding conflicts in their own catalogs. However, there do seem to be altogether too many dates being added to unique-looking names that are already established. I think we should be aware of the issues of bibliographic file maintenance, which is often simply not done due to lack of resources.

Michael did say he was going to add it to the authority record, not necessarily to the authorised access point.

Please do not add the date of birth. See the LC/PCC statement to RDA 9.19.1.3 on the optional addition of a date to an existing AR when there is no conflict “Unless otherwise changing the 100 field, do not add a date of birth and/or date of death to an existing AACR2 or RDA authorized access point without dates.”

In doing follow-up work to LTI, our authority vendor, I notice a disturbing number of changes that disregard this policy statement. Few catalogers have the time to edit OCLC to match authority records, ILS abilities to change bibliographic records when authority records change are woefully inadequate, and “is this heading without dates the same as this one without?” is a decision that needs human intervention. So, the result of “improving” authority records in this way is bound to be an increase in the number of bibliographic records that don’t match authority records. The point of authority control is supposed to be collocation, not representing the ideal heading in a file isolated from the catalog.

Thanks for finding this. His email to me was brief, and seemed to imply that my conclusions had been correct. He did provide a date of birth, which I will add to the authority record once it’s out of distribution. And now I can sort through our titles and distribute them according to the CV.

And not to worry, I spelled it “Curtain” once in my email to him! (blush)

Sorry, his surname is spelled “Curtin” in the NAR and in the CV. He should not be confused with the decorative window covering.

According to the CV of Richard T. Curtain (https://www.src.isr.umich.edu/cv/cv_curtin.pdf<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.src.isr.umich.edu_cv_cv-5Fcurtin.pdf&d=CwMFAg&c=mRWFL96tuqj9V0Jjj4h40ddo0XsmttALwKjAEOCyUjY&r=aK1gvC3Rf2oDooDSUQaPt6UiEGTPgQpU6cj8WbFFaiI&m=VqoEf8zL7W5N4taW0QxOatIvf69DUP_a_Nejpsfpk3w&s=DPKxKgn63UfRLdxNCvoNZ7iZPCQ1jx6Zs-OOUNpYwSw&e=>) he his associated with the title in the 1st 670 Fertility change after the baby boom (see page 57 of CV) and the title in the 2nd 670, Income equity among U.S. workers (see page 10 of the CV) so you should neither created 2 NARs for this one person nor should you ask to have this NAR deleted.

I have updated the authority record to cite the CV so no one will think that there are 2 different people represented.

Subject: [PCCLIST] NAR n 92028168

Dear Collective Wisdom,

My apologies to the list, because I am fairly certain that a similar question has been asked recently, but I cannot find it, nor the answer.

NAR n 92028168 is labeled as a record for a unique heading, but in fact has two different persons listed on it. It may be that the cataloger who added the second title really thought that it was by the same person as the first, but it is not. So, should I treat this as if it were an undifferentiated heading, and create two new NARs, one for each person on the record, and ask for this one to be deleted? I believe the answer is yes, but I cannot remember with certainty. The other option, of course, would be to remove the incorrect information, leave the correct information as it was originally, and create a new record for the second author.

Thank you for your patience, and your replies.

Michael
