We are pleased to announce four presentations at Midwinter 2017 session of the LITA/ALCTS Authority Control Interest Group.

Date and time: Sunday, January 22nd, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

Place: Atlanta, Georgia, Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC), Room A312

1.     “‘Authority Control’ see (also) ‘Identity Management’”

Presenters:  members of the PCC Task Group on Identity Management in NACO:

John J. Riemer, Head, UCLA Library Cataloging & Metadata Center and Violeta Ilik, Head, Digital Systems & Collection Services, Galter Health Sciences Library, Northwestern University

With increasing frequency, terminology like “Identity Management” is being used where one might previously have seen “Authority Control.”  What is driving this trend and what exactly is the difference between those concepts?   Come hear about some of the emerging use cases illustrating the difference, where library authority data is being utilized in new ways.  Let’s discuss some of the implications these developments have for where authority work is done and who does it.

2.     “Authority Control and the University of Nebraska--Lincoln’s Institutional Repository”

Presenter: Margaret (Meg) Mering, Authority Control Librarian, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries

This presentation will discuss the workflow for authority control in the Institutional Repository at the University of Nebraska--Lincoln. It will discuss the limitations of implementing authority control in an IR, and why some people question whether it is really necessary in an IR.  The future addition of ORCID identifiers to the repository and the potential for partnering with other University of Nebraska campuses will also be covered.

3.      Updates from OCLC

Presenter: Nathan Putnam, Director of Metadata Quality, OCLC

Nathan Putnam will update attendees on OCLC authority projects, controlled vocabulary work and more.

4.     Updates from the Library of Congress

Presenter: Janis L. Young, Policy and Standards Division, Library of Congress

Session moderator:  Paul Robert Burley, Metadata & Discovery Services Librarian, Northwestern University
