Rice University's Fondren Library is seeking a creative and future-oriented leader as the Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services. The successful candidate will provide leadership both in managing current staff and services and in collaboratively envisioning and implementing evolving services of this user-oriented department. Responsibilities: Serves as direct manager of the Cataloging & Metadata Services Department, with a staff of 15 FTE. Direct reports are: Metadata/Copy Cataloging Team Lead, Metadata Coordinator, Database and Metadata Management Coordinator and four specialized professional catalogers. The department’s responsibilities are wide-ranging, and include adding record sets to the catalog for electronic resource packages, creating order records in the library system, providing metadata and consultations for a broad range of local digital initiatives and cleanup routines in the institutional repository. Current library collections budget is $12.2 million. The position is responsible for strategizing to improve discoverability of the library’s resources. The position manages departmental projects and participates in inter-departmental and library-wide committees and work groups established to further various aspects of the Fondren Library mission.
Required Qualifications include:
- ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science
- Two years of experience as successful manager of a library cataloging unit
- Demonstrated commitment to staff development and continuing education
- Leadership skills and an ability to reach consensus with diverse constituencies
- Ability to recommend solutions in areas not under direct supervision
- Thorough knowledge of principles and standards for cataloging and metadata, including standard codes, machine coding standards and linked data principles
- Experience in an academic library
- System migration experience
Salary & benefits: $69,000 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate with experience and qualifications; no state or local income tax; 21 benefit days; 8 study days; a range of retirement options including TIAA/CREF; health and life insurance; and tuition waiver.
