I think that battle’s been lost with the descriptions that we get on the Archives Hub (from UK archives). The vast majority of people catalogue photograph collections, for example, under the subject of photographs. I suppose it may be true that many researchers looking for photographs would search by subject rather than type.  Even though they are not really looking for photographs as a subject, but as a type!  One reason we haven’t yet introduced a search option specifically by genre and form is that researchers might use that instead….and actually find a good deal less content. 

I’m not sure we can ever sort this one out, as we can’t carry out a global edit to put ‘photographs’ or ‘posters’ or ‘account books’ into genre/form automatically, because in some cases they really are subjects.  

I suspect that this is something the archival cataloguing software doesn’t necessarily help with - I wonder if some systems don’t really provide the option to have a genre/form field.

People looking for fairytales, posters, and diaries had a hard time distinguishing in the online catalogs between descriptions of books "about" those materials and descriptions of the actual materials.
