Back when I was in cataloging training 20+ years ago, my instructors/colleagues told me to use the authorized form of the institution name in the thesis note.  I can’t find any rule stating this, but it was the standard practice at the time – at least among some institutions.

One reason to use the authorized form of the institution is so that someone looking for that institution’s theses can retrieve the majority of their theses with a single search.  They don’t have to worry about alternative spellings or forms or even languages.

Save the time of the user.

Thank you--this reasoning seems sound. It was the direction I was heading anyway, but I wanted confirmation I wasn't missing something.

I think that “transcribe as found” makes the most sense in the case of the 502 field.  After all, it is a note field, not an authorized access point.

The cataloger would then have the option of adding an authorized access point for the name of the degree granting institution, which would be constructed according to the RDA guidelines for constructing authorized access points.  The cataloger could then add the relationship designator “degree granting institution” to the authorized access point.

Lost in the mists of time, it runs in my mind that this is a case of "transcribe as found".

Hi Christine,

I'm unaware of any instruction or policy that prescribes how to record the degree granting institution in the MARC 502 $c.  You can do it either way.  If you are going to provide an authorized access point for the institution, that AAP should be in the authorized form.

When recording the granting institution of a thesis or dissertations in 502 $c, should it be recorded in authorized form or as it appears on the resource? Neither RDA nor MARC provide clear guidance.
