It would be nice if the subseries title were the AAP, then it would clearly be a major change. However, RDA 6.27.2.2 seems to tie our hands in that regard.

The default option is to add cross references and a new 642 field to the existing SAR. That may be what I end up doing.

Subject: Re: [PCCLIST] Title change in subseries?

Interesting! Clearly there’s no “major” change in the main title. To me, “Freiburg i. Br.” should not have been considered as part of the series title in the first place, as it merely refers to the location of the Max-Planck-Institut. Now that it’s gone, the main title looks neater.

As for the title of the subseries, I would think that it’s a major change, as the removal of the word “deutscher” will have huge implications for its readers as well as for the publisher. Based on Max-Planck-Institut’s own description, it originally began as “Sammlung ausländischer Strafgesetzbücher in deutscher Übersetzung” by itself as a series in 1884 and now, it seems, they are calling it “Sammlung ausländischer Strafgesetzbücher in Übersetzung” (https://www.mpicc.de/de/forschung/publikationen/uebersetzungen.html). The prominence of this title in the current publication (Reihe G 124), as you have rightly observed, makes one wonder if it could stand by itself once again.

On the other and, if we don’t create a series AR, what would we do to the current AR? Just add a few references? And what about the “new” designator?

130 0 Schriftenreihe des Max-Planck-Instituts für Ausländisches und Internationales Strafrecht, Freiburg i. Br. $t Sammlung ausländischer Strafgesetzbücher in deutscher Übersetzung
430 0 Schriftenreihe des Max-Planck-Instituts für Ausländisches und Internationales Strafrecht. $t Sammlung ausländischer Strafgesetzbücher in Übersetzung
430 0 Sammlung ausländischer Strafgesetzbücher in deutscher Übersetzung (perhaps needs a qualifier)
430 0 Sammlung ausländischer Strafgesetzbücher in Übersetzung

Subject: [PCCLIST] Title change in subseries?

The „Schriftenreihe des Max-Planck-Instituts für Ausländisches und Internationales Strafrecht, Freiburg i. Br. Reihe G, Reihe G 124,“ (LCCN no2004102707) has started to include English translations in the series in addition to the German and is now called „Schriftenreihe des Max-Planck-Instituts für Ausländisches und Internationales Strafrecht. Sammlung ausländischer Strafgesetzbücher in Übersetzung.“ In other words, they dropped „Freiburg i. Br.“ and „Reihe G“ (dropped on earlier issues) and the word “deutscher.” All these changes occur after the first 5 words of the common title. Reihe G is now indicated by the volume numbering, e.g. Band G 124. The subseries title is given more prominently on the series t.p. and the subseries appears alone on the half t.p.

Does any of this add up to a major change?
