FEDLINK Orientation to Federal Libraries
and Information Centers Series:

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture
Garden Library

At the center of research across the Smithsonian are the specialized branches and librarians of the Smithsonian Libraries. The collections and staff of the Libraries play a key role in helping the Smithsonian’s research and curatorial staff make sense of the museums’ almost innumerable, often unique, objects with their cultural and historical contexts. The Smithsonian Libraries are a hidden national treasure, where experts come to test and expand knowledge and where America and the world can turn for authentic answers.

The Hirshhorn Museum Library, founded in 1969 as part of Joseph Hirshhorn’s collection, is one branch of Smithsonian Libraries’ network of 21 specialized libraries and 9 research centers. Although physically small, it holds a world class collection devoted to modern and contemporary painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, photography, video, film and emerging art forms. The library has books, exhibition catalogues, serials, and ephemeral material from 1880 to the present, with an emphasis on artists in the Hirshhorn’s collection and on artists featured in the exhibition program. During the FEDLINK tour, we will show off highlights from our monographic and ephemeral special collections.
