NLS Operations Alert
No. 17-63
DATE : September 27, 2017
TO : Network Libraries
FROM : Vickie Collins, Head, Network Services Section
SUBJECT : MOCA Project
NLS has developed a device called Mobile Cartridge (MOCA) that allows digital talking books to be delivered wirelessly. When the user inserts a blank cartridge into the device, a preselected
book automatically downloads onto the cartridge, which can then be removed and played using a digital talking-book machine (DTBM). NLS recently completed an initial trial phase among its own staff, and now is ready to move to the second trial phase by offering
a MOCA device to each regional library.
Libraries wishing to receive a MOCA device should provide their library code; the name of one staff member as a contact person/MOCA user; and that individual’s position title, email address,
and telephone number to Paula Bahmani ([log in to unmask]) by COB Tuesday, October 3, 2017.

After library staff have gained some experience with MOCA, NLS will conduct a survey to determine which regional libraries would like a small quantity of devices (2–4) to use with patrons.
The quantity of devices may vary depending upon the number of libraries participating.
