Job Description

Backstage Library Works is seeking a Cataloger to work on-site at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park, processing metal disc phonograph sound recordings. The project is expected to run for ten (10) months, with potential for another twelve (12) months.

The cataloger will work with materials to create ICMS and MARC catalog records according to the Library's record guidelines. Prior to hiring, each cataloger must demonstrate knowledge of standard cataloging practice.


Perform ICMS cataloging using local guidelines in the library’s database
Perform original and copy cataloging using RDA standard and local guidelines in MARC format
Photograph each side of the disc using local guidelines
Handle library materials with care
Transport materials to and from work station across park campus
Meet daily production levels and standards
Make informed decisions within given specifications with little supervision

Master of Library Science (MLS) or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field of study which provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do this work

Applicant must have a college-level education AND at least two (2) years of relevant training and experience

Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging practices and standards
Demonstrated knowledge of museum collection or special collections handling
Attentiveness to detail and quality
Work in a deadline-oriented, production environment
Strong organizational skills
Ability to work independently & productively
Learn new skills quickly and thoroughly
Type speed minimum: 50+ wpm
Ability to lift 40 lbs.
Must pass a general knowledge test
Must pass a background check and drug test prior to appointment
