The New York Chapter of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections presents their May 2017 program:

THE INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF DISCOGRAPHIES

Presented by Peter Laurence

In the fall of 2015, the Discography Committee of the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) began work on a collaborative project to build an online International Bibliography of Discographies (IBD).

We chose a bibliography in order to update the work of earlier compilers, and to accomplish the first truly international survey of discographic work done to date. We also saw connecting memory institutions and private collectors - two groups that are both passionate about their collections, but don't always share the same goals - as the essential first step for the project.

Over the next year, we reached out to many individuals, institutions and associations around the world, with "connect, collect and collaborate" as the goal of the committee and our project. In early 2017 we published the first iteration of the bibliography on the IASA website. Our team (including students in the U.S. and the Czech Republic) added entries, but many were also received from our network of collaborators around the world.

The IBD includes discographies created in book, article, CD-ROM, PDF, website, and database formats, representing label, artist and genre discographies in many languages, as well as record catalogs. Such a work will never be absolutely complete, but our goal is to include information about all current and out-of-print discographies published worldwide in print and electronic formats, including unpublished work in progress.

In the last two years we have presented papers about the bibliography at ARSC, IASA, GHT (Gesellschaft für Historische Tonträger), and other European conferences. At IASA 2016, we held our first workshop for anyone interested in contributing to the bibliography.
