Thanks all for chiming in. 
I've removed the door window but the old screws are still in there:

and I'm not sure how to get them out. 

I don't have much experience servicing electronics of this vintage. Is replacing the idler tire (I only see one but haven't looked at the service manual yet) a simple enough task with schematics that a relative newcomer can do it? If not I'll look into servicing the deck. (Any recommended technicians in and around Manhattan would be greatly appreciated.)
