• EAD3: the Basics: January 16 – January 19, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CST – The Encoded Archival Description (EAD) is an internationally recognized XML -based standard for encoding archival finding aids. This live, online workshop will provide a solid introduction to EAD3. Early bird registration ends 1/2/18
• Creating a Social Media Policy January 17, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. CST – In this course, you will learn how to mitigate your library's social media risk with the development of a social media policy. Attendees will learn about the key steps and common themes when developing a policy and learn how to write guidelines that will provide you, your staff, and even your patrons with the understanding of how using social media fits within the overall vision and mission of your organization. • Reference and Information Services January 23 – February 1, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. CST – This course will introduce you the key concepts and tools necessary in reference and information services. You will study and discuss approaches to reference and information services; become knowledgeable about the application of core reference principles and information technologies as they relate to daily activities of library and information providers; and explore and analyze real-world reference issues as they pertain to resource selection, user privacy and confidentiality. This course is perfect for new reference librarians/paraprofessionals or those who need a refresher. Early bird registration ends 1/2/2018
• Regular Expressions January 23 – January 25, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CST – Instructor Mike Pullin and Regular Expressions is back by popular demand! This course is an introduction to managing and editing data by learning the syntax and construction of a regular expression, which is a sequence of characters that define a search (and sometimes replace) pattern. The basic characters used to construct a pattern will be discussed and then the patterns will be used in hands-on examples. Regular expressions are used in integrated library system search/replace reports, some text editors (like Notepad++), and MarcEdit. Early bird registration ends 1/2/2018
• Digitizing Analog Audio Resources January 24 – January 25, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CST – Digital audio is a well-established technology and analog audio playback capabilities are rapidly disappearing. How will libraries and archives with aging audio collections navigate this transition and preserve their sonic treasures? This workshop outlines the challenges for libraries as they transfer their analog audio resources to newer digital technologies. Early bird registration ends 1/2/18
• EAD2HTML: Transforming your Finding Aids with XSL January 30 – February 2, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CST – Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL), is a powerful tool for transforming XML documents into other formats. This workshop focuses on applying XSL to transform Encoded Archival Description (EAD-Version 3) finding aids into valid HTML5 files viewable on the web. Early bird registration ends 1/8/18
• Understanding and Using Library Data January 30 – February 1, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. CST – A new course led by data expert, Elaine Lasda at University of Albany, will teach students effective collection, interpretation and display of library data informs library decision-making and service design. This course serves as a primer for basic analytic concepts and methods and a refresher on tried-and-true statistics. Students will discuss the relative merits and limitations of concepts covered. The course will provide instruction on several free tools for collecting, analyzing and visualizing data. Students will draft a data analysis project to use in their own library. • Creating and curating digital story times February 5 – February 6, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CST – In this course, we will identify existing story time apps and tools that can be adapted to story time. We will also list the steps involved in recording your own story time. Finally, we will discuss the possible drawbacks and challenges of incorporating digital story times. Early bird registration ends 1/15/18
• Metadata Principles and Practices 01: Metadata Basics February 6, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CST - This 2-hour online workshop will cover the basics of metadata. Topics include: defining metadata; outlining the purposes and functions of metadata; list the components of a metadata infrastructure and keys to successfully launching a new metadata standard; understand how well-formed XML provides a framework for expressing metadata in an online environment. Early bird registration ends 1/15/18
• Checking Your Website for Accessibility Issues February 7 – February 8, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. CST – This course will focus on understanding the requirements of Section 508 for federal agencies and the Web Accessibility Guidelines and how to evaluate your website for accessibility issues. • Metadata Principles and Practices 02: Metadata Standards and Types February 8, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CST – In this second workshop in the series "Metadata Principles and Practices," students will discover how metadata standards are created and explore several standards commonly in use today. Topics include: XML DTDs and schemas; types and examples of metadata currently in use today. Early bird registration ends 1/17/18
• Metadata Principles and Practices 03: Customization and Exchange February 13, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CST – This third workshop in the "Metadata Principles and Practices" series covers the processes by which institutions customize existing metadata standards, exchange and harvest metadata, transform metadata from one standard to another and migrate metadata to a newer standard. Topics to be covered include: metadata quality factors, application profiles, the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting, metadata crosswalks and stylesheets. • Metadata Principles and Practices 04: Metadata Relationships February 15, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CST –This final workshop in the Metadata Principles and Practices series focuses on the role of expressing relationships in metadata to enhance resource discovery. Topics to be covered include how the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard maintains links between metadata and the resources they describe, how the Semantic Web, RDF and Linked Data semantically articulate relationships between entities to aggregate metadata components and enable users to find resources related to their research interests, and the Bibliographic Framework (BibFrame) as an application of RDF and its potential as a replacement for MARC 21. • Older Adults in the Library February 15, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. CST – In this course, we will identify what older adults want from their local library. We will compile a list of program and resources for older adults. Finally, we will discuss possible challenges inherent in serving older adults. Early bird registration ends 1/24/28
• Library Management for Beginners: Managing from the Middle February 28, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. CST – 2016’s popular Library Management for Beginners Series is back for 2018. Middle managers are the liaisons between their employees and library administrators. Apropos to their title, these managers may feel caught in the middle as they attempt to hear and listen to both sides and adapt. A manager’s ability to successfully work with administration as well as foster a rapport with their direct reports is a crucial driver of success in libraries. This course is designed to help the first-time library manager gain a foundation to successfully manage from the middle. Early bird registration ends 2/6/2018
