Hello,

I’ve emailed Paul Frank about this (editing related authority records when you change a 100) before and he said “It is optional but highly recommended that you also update any dependent records when the re-coding of an authority record to RDA involves a change in the 1XX.”

This is why I’m now very cautious about closing out dates for people with multiple pseudonyms in 400s that also have open dates. Thought I was just closing out Anne Coulter Martens. Then she had four pseudonyms in 400 fields who also had open dates. Well, that’s not so bad… oh, the 400s also have name-title records. It was fun, but also more involved than I had planned on it being.

Sincerely,
Eric Willey (pronouns: he/him/his)

I've always considered it standard procedure to modify any and all related authority records if you make a change to the AAP. (That should kind of help in understanding why unnecessary changes to an AAP should be avoided...)

I’m pretty sure yes? That eventuality is not covered in DCM Z as far as I can see but if you’re going to create a new NAR for the priest you should probably make sure related ARs match.

Thank you, Ben. I assume I should also update and replace the name-title record for the priest?

Hi,

If the NACO FAQ is still current, then the guidelines for what to do when you encounter and need to edit an undifferentiated name are in the DCM Z1, section 008/32.

The essential bit is here:
“When information is found to distinguish a person in an existing undifferentiated name record:
• Always create a new name authority record for that person, with distinguishing information, and add an indication that the person was formerly on an undifferentiated record (see 667 notes on records for identities previously on undifferentiated records below).
• Transfer the citation 670 pertaining to that person from the undifferentiated name record to the new name authority record and edit as necessary.
• If the undifferentiated NAR is not being deleted because multiple identities remain, delete the pair of 670 fields pertaining to the newly created NAR.
• If more than one identity remains in the undifferentiated NAR, and there is not sufficient information in the NAR to create new NARs for each name, leave the NAR coded AACR2.

Subject: [PCCLIST] How to split one NAR into two?

Hello -
I need to control an author heading for for John Callanan, a priest. But it will not control because the NAR for John Callanan (ARN 3561329) contains info for both the priest and some photographer, and has the prohibitive 667 field. How do I split these into two NARs? Like this?
(1) Strip the priest info from the NAR and Replace Record, then
(2) Make a new NAR for the priest, with a distinguishing identifier?
Or, since the priest also has a name/title record, leave the non-differentiated record for the priest, and create a new record for the photographer?
Thanks!
Ann
