Eero, thanks for your comments. My guess is the lassoo technique can work 
with a simple patterned noise such as the audience member whistle  in this 
RX demo,

but not so sure it would work on  swish or hiss which is essentially random, 
and which is a far more common problem with legacy, damaged and amateur 
recorded media. I suspect if random noise could be surgically removed from 
legacy media it would justifiably cause a sensation...
