[Posting to the PCC, SACO, BIBCO, and CONSER listservs]

Are you new to making classification proposals through the SACO Program? Or would you like a refresher on how it's done? If so, please join us for a SACO workshop to be held in conjunction with the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans!

The workshop, "Proposing New and Revised Classification Numbers," is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the process of making classification proposals. Through lectures and hands-on exercises, participants will reinforce their knowledge of the principles of classification and the efficient use of Classification Web search techniques to find the appropriate place to classify a resource. Participants will also learn which numbers need to be proposed and which can be created on the fly, and will receive guidance on specific types of proposals (e.g., proposals in tables). Finally, participants will receive hands-on instruction in the use of the Classification Proposal System to make proposals for cutter numbers, call number ranges, and cross-references.

The workshop will consist of a slightly modified version of a class offered to Library of Congress catalogers. It will be led by Janis L. Young, a senior cataloging policy specialist in the Policy and Standards Division of the Library of Congress, with assistance from Paul Frank, SACO Program coordinator.

When: Friday, June 22, 2018
                                9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
(Registration and light refreshments begin at 8:30 a.m.)
Where: Tulane University
                                Howard-Tilton Memorial Library
7001 Freret Street
New Orleans, LA 70118

The workshop is free. Participants will be expected to provide their own transportation, lodging, and lunch. Each participant is expected to bring his/her passwords for accessing Cataloger's Desktop, Classification Web, and the Classification Proposal System. Networked computers will be provided in the classroom.

We expect a lot of interest in the workshop, but space is limited so we encourage you to register early. Registration is limited to staff from PCC institutions, and if demand exceeds the space available, preference will be given to staff from new and existing SACO institutions.

Register by Friday, May 11 by emailing [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> with the message line "SACO workshop registration request." Confirmations will be sent by Friday, May 18; please wait for the confirmation before making any travel reservations.
