I think in cases where a previously non-preferred name of a body has become its preferred name, leading to a new NAR, I’ve simply not made the 410 on the earlier NAR. The name is still present as part of the reference structure – it’s just a “See also” rather than a “See”.

Subject: [PCCLIST] Date qualifiers in corporate names

I am dealing with a conflict between (a) the variant name for one body, and (b) the to-be-established name for another body. These bodies have a successor/predecessor relationship.

The earlier body is:
Adekunle Ajasin University. Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies

This name appears as early as 2005, and as late as 2008, in WorldCat records and resources I have in hand.

This earlier body is partially succeeded by:
Adekunle Ajasin University. Department of Religion and African Culture
(this name is used currently for a department on the University's web site)

This earlier body has a variant name (used in 2006 on a resource that also carries the name used as the established name):
Adekunle Ajasin University. Department of Philosophy

The later body (to be established) is:
Adekunle Ajasin University. Department of Philosophy
(this name is used currently for a department on the University's web site)

This later body appears as early as 2017. I belive this later body should also be considered as a successor to the earlier body. (Essentially, it appears that the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies split into Department of Philosophy and Department of Religion and African Culture; although, I could also imagine the possibility that yet another body was involved as a predecessor of Department of Religion and African Culture—but I have no reason to try to go there.)

I have two main questions about this:

1) Would it be sufficient to use the name "Adekunle Ajasin University. Department of Philosophy" (no qualifier), and add a date qualifier to that name used as a variant in the earlier record?

2) How should we deal with imprecise dates as qualifiers in corporate name headings? The only dates that I can think of to add to the 410 in the earlier name record would be 2005-2008, but "Adekunle Ajasin University. Department of Philosophy (2005-2008)" just doesn't look right. And if I were to qualify the later name, "Adekunle Ajasin University. Department of Philosophy (2017- )" looks even worse, for some reason.

Thanks for any advice that can be offered!
