Congratulations to Sharon Shallo for her role in leading a national discussion among the Centers to retain the 4-6th grade category in the LAL LOC reading-writing initiative. New Jersey has participated in this program for over 15 years with great success bringing forth marvelous examples of thoughtful essays that have gone on to receive national prominence. We congratulate the LOC for reinstating the 4-6th grade level category and for revisiting this decision. Best regards, Renee Swartz Chair, NJ Center for the Book

Hi, Julianna,
Perhaps you may want to contact state centers in LAL "non-participating" states.. Those are -- according to the memo we received a couple of weeks ago -- ID, KY, NC, OR, KS, DE, SD, PR and -- we learned last week -- CO. (Josephine from CO won't be at NBF, though. Someone else from her staff is coming instead.) BTW -- I was surprised to see NC on the list because I recall Frannie Ashburn (director pre-Molly Westmoreland) was a huge promoter of the program., and I think I thought Molly was, as well.
Sharon

After hearing that the bulk of our meeting before the National Book Festival would be dedicated to Letters About Literature, I am ust wondering if any other states/orgs that do NOT participate in Letters About Literature through their CFB would like to have a sidebar conversation or meeting on a relevant topic. I know CA can’t be the only one!
