FEDLINK ORIENTATION TO FEDERAL LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS SERIES:
THE UNITED STATES SENATE LIBRARY
Tuesday, October 30, 2018
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Senate Library provides a wide range of information services to the Senate community and maintains one of the nation’s foremost collections of congressional documents. In 1791, the Secretary of the
Senate was instructed by the Senate “to procure and deposit in his office, the laws of the several states” for the use of senators. Over time, the collection grew and in July 1871 the Senate appointed the first librarian and designated rooms in the Capitol
for the United States Senate Library.
From its current location in the Russell Senate Office Building, the library’s mission has expanded beyond collecting material to providing confidential, nonpartisan, and timely legal and legislative
research to senators, Senate staff nationwide, Senate committees, and members of the accredited press. Librarians conduct outreach, train, and assist Senate staff in their use of legislative and commercial databases in support of the library’s management of
enterprise-wide electronic research services for the Senate community.
The tour will provide an overview of the library’s space, services, collections, and unique materials from
the collections.
