Dear Senate GIS Working Group, Friends, & GIS Enthusiasts:

Happy early Thanksgiving!

Next week, Senator Hatch’s office, in partnership with the Senate GIS Working Group, will be hosting a 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) Roundtable in the U.S. Capitol Building. The roundtable is scheduled for: Tuesday, November 27 at 2PM EST in the President Pro Tempore Ceremonial Office, located in S-125, The Capitol. Leading the discussion will be Mr. Kevin T. Gallagher of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The purpose of this event is to discuss the 3DEP program and to highlight some of its achievements—as well as to have a discussion about what the road ahead looks for elevation mapping in the United States. Many of your bosses may be interested to learn about the important program, specifically about the uniquely collaborative way it engages the private sector. Of note, we will discuss how the 3DEP program have helped/continue to help your individual state(s).

The primary goal of 3DEP is to systematically collect 3D elevation data in the form of light detection and ranging (lidar) data over the conterminous United States, Hawaii, and the U.S. territories, with data acquired over an 8-year period.
