Kristin,

The 670s cited by Adam below were part of a clean-up project to get rid of old format 678 fields quickly without losing information. They were not intended to be part of a regular workflow.  In your case, please 1) delete the 678 field; 2) add a 670 field with the date of birth in the source you found.  Then if you want to add a 678 field following instructions in DCM Z1 678 section and in RDA 9.17 Biographical Information, you can also do that.  The 678 field is not required.

Kristin,

You can convert the 678 to a 670.  Here are some examples I found in authority records (I did a note keyword search for “678” in OCLC Connexion):

670   Info. converted from 678, 2012-10-02 ǂb (b. 1913)

670  Information from 678 converted Dec. 8, 2014 ǂb (est. Dec. 1970)

670  Data from 678 field, Dec. 1, 2016 ǂb (Activated on May 10, 1946 and called the 406th Medical General Laboratory. The name was later changed to 406th Medical Laboratory)

670  Information from 678 converted Dec. 15, 2014 ǂb (Construction started by the end of 1934)

670  Information from 678 converted Jan. 5, 2015 ǂb (Prof. Dr.; Ordinarius f. Pol. u. Őffentl. Recht. Univ. Regensburg; b. 1930)

670  Information from 678 converted Dec. 19, 2014 ǂb (Organized 1854 as the Aberdeen and North cf Scotland Trade Protection Society; 1870, name changed to Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce and North of Scotland Trade Protection Society)

Subject: 678 or 670

Hello,

This is my first 678 field that I have encountered so I wanted to seek some advice.

[log in to unmask]" alt="cid:[log in to unmask]">

Would it be permissible to change this 678 to a 670 or remove it altogether? I do have a MyHeritage source that gives the full date of birth (Apr 29 1943) so that could replace the information that the 678 was providing.

Any help is appreciated,
