I've been using denatured alcohol for tape deck head cleaning for years
(about 45 of them) with no adverse effects. Denatured alcohol is pure
alcohol with 3 or 4% other ingredients that make it undrinkable andwill
usually enhance cleaning. I was once told that denatured alcohol will
cause any head laminations to separate. I've never experienced that over
the years and have used denatured alcohol on several different brands
and types of decks, professional, prosumer & consumer.

For cleaning old grease and such, I will typically use Hexane or Naphtha
(lighter fluid).

For general cleaning, I will typically use a surface cleaner such as
Windex multi-surface.
