Cyber-Security for Libraries
Libraries are not immune from attack: American Libraries magazine wrote about one such attack that happened at Spartanburg County Public Library in 2018 and The Guardian wrote about another attack on a library that happened in St. Louis in 2017. These are mere examples of a continuing threat to the mission of libraries to make information available to our patrons. Cyber-security threats impede the mission of the library to make information available by, among other reasons, impeding patrons access to digital information, stunting their ability to check out information while the libraries computers are down, and by diverting limited assets to fixing damage after it occurs.

This timely workshop will cover topics such as: IT Security Fundamentals, Privacy, What Hackers Are After and How They Do It, How to Protect Yourself and Stay Safe Online, & Integrating IT Security in Libraries. This workshop is a condensed version of a larger class of workshops that Ruth teaches to corporations, businesses, nonprofits and other interested parties.

Lunch will be provided.
With over 20 years in the Information Technology (IT) field, Ruth Capezzone has attained extensive experience as a network administrator, security consultant, vulnerability assessor, and penetration tester for various Fortune 500 companies and government agencies such as Microsoft, Citrix, United States Marine Corps, and United States Department of Treasury, to name a few.

Ruth has developed and implemented policies and procedures concerning the security and integrity of network data. She has also provided key solutions for products such as Citrix NetScaler, Cisco security devices, and Microsoft servers. By developing good rapport with customers and trainees, she has garnered responses such as “She took really complex concept and made it easy to understand” and “She made very dry material fun and interesting”. Ruth graduated, magna cum laude, from Kansas State University with a Master’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

The Department of Library and Information Science at Catholic University of America has graciously offered participants free parking in the garage behind the Law School.
