Hi Everyone -

Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of free Department of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures, entitled "Great White Elephants and the National Park Service" on Tuesday, August 20th from 1:00 - 1:45 pm ET in the Stewart Lee Udall Department of the Interior Building's John Muir Room.

San Francisco’s Old U.S. Mint, one of the few buildings that survived the city’s disastrous 1906 earthquake, has been the subject of an intense historic preservation debate since the end of World War II. Its case study illustrates the choice between the “adaptive use” and “surplus disposal” of federal sites, structures, and buildings. Developing conventions that would allow for the continued productive use of these “Great White Elephant” buildings, while not substantially compromising their character, played a significant role as the National Park Service’s approach to historic preservation matured during the mid-twentieth century.

Please join Dr. John Sprinkle, historian with the National Park Service’s Park History Program, as he takes a look at the balancing act between the preservation of grand historic structures and the reuse and repurposing of these buildings in a modern environment.
