NLS Operations Alert

No. 19-65

DATE : September 26, 2019
TO : Network Libraries
FROM : Vickie Collins, Head, Network Services Section
SUBJECT : Orientation 2020

Network library staff who have completed at least six months on the job may now register for one of three 2020 NLS orientation programs. The three-day programs, held in Washington, D.C., provide a comprehensive overview of NLS procedures and policies and give participants the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of NLS operations and services, interact with NLS staff, and work with colleagues from around the network. NLS also offers an optional equipment inspection/repair workshop following each orientation session.

The 2020 orientation schedule is:

  * March 17-19, Tuesday-Thursday (plus Friday, March 20, for the equipment inspection/repair workshop)
  * June 23-25, Tuesday-Thursday (plus Friday, June 26, for the equipment inspection/repair workshop)
  * October 20-22, Tuesday-Thursday (plus Friday, October 23, for the equipment inspection/repair workshop)

Representatives from each of the NLS divisions, sections, and offices will brief participants on NLS functions and answer questions. Each registrant may choose two one-hour Experience NLS sessions on topics such as accessing the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service, audiobook production, and book selection for the national collection. Participants will also have a professional tour of the Library of Congress buildings on Capitol Hill.

A sample agenda is available at 10.4 Sample Orientation Schedule<http://www.loc.gov/nlsold/nlm/10_4_SampleOrientationSchedule.html>. Participants are expected to attend the entire three-day program.
