Please excuse duplication as this information is shared on multiple platforms.

FADGI (Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative) is pleased to announce that one of its premiere products, BWF MetaEdit<https://mediaarea.net/BWFMetaEdit>, is getting an upgrade! BWF MetaEdit is a free, open source tool that supports embedding, validating, and exporting of metadata in Broadcast WAVE Format (BWF) files, including support for the FADGI authored Guideline for Federal Agency Use of Broadcast WAVE Files<http://www.digitizationguidelines.gov/guidelines/digitize-embedding.html>. Since its initial release in 2009 through AVP<https://www.weareavp.com/products/bwf-metaedit/>, BWF MetaEdit has become an essential part of many audio digitization workflows, with active users from diverse communities of practice with over 40,000 downloads and counting. Working with Jerome Martinez of MediaArea<https://mediaarea.net/> and Dave Rice of RiceCapades over the next two years, improvements to BWF MetaEdit will include support for resolving outstanding issues as well as adding new features and capabilities. FADGI will encourage community feedback as the process moves forward (through the GitHub issue tracker<https://github.com/MediaArea/BWFMetaEdit/issues> and other means) and is committed to supporting open source projects. Contact Kate Murray ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) for more information.

The serial numbers for the disk are: 82187-R/82187/L.
The label is black embossed...not really a label, but part of the record.

The cartridge is wired out of  phase.  That's why most of the other EDDs
play beautifully.

Ben

I can describe everything, but why does this one disk not play when all my
other EDDs sound fine?
It's a vertical groove like all the other EDDs.

I have both the left and the right RCA pin plugs in a Y adapter, and the
cartridge is wired for vertical grooves.
This set-up works fine for all the other EDDs, but not this one.
The catalog number is 82187 L/R.  The label is black and is an integral
part of the record, not a glued-on paper label.

Regards,
Ben

I don’t do disc, only tape, but a though occurs - why not try it with a stereo cartridge wired for stereo and look at the waveform? Maybe that one is not vertical?

I'm wondering if that record may have been played on an acoustic machine made for laterally-cut records, using a steel needle. That would have severely damaged the vertical modulation, and destroyed it with repeated plays. Many years ago, I had a book on antiques and collectibles that had a photo on the cover of a genuine Victrola playing an Edison Diamond Disc. As Toscanini used to say, "Ignorante."

Of course, the record should not appear to be in excellent condition, if that's the case. But, I'm at a loss to explain this, otherwise.

Best,
Gary

I wouldn't trust any stylus deal that is 2 for 25 bucks. That said, they
may be OK for playing any disc that would put a more expensive stylus at
risk.

Seth Winner and I tried some 3rd-party Stanton replacement stylii, and they were all garbage. The problem is that there isn't anything good for those cartridges right now, at least not what we've seen.

Very true,

I have complained to Expert Stylus that they need to consider supporting
Stanton again because so many are still in use. But, alas, no go.

The Rachmaninoff  record is from 1919 - too early for any Edison lateral. mx
numbers 6742-C/6744-A  both April of 1919. Edison Needle Cut didn't come
along till 1929.
As for cartridge wiring, I have my cartridge wired normally. I know that

I've ordered Jico replacements for a Shure cartridge and found them to be
close in quality. Jico makes Stanton replacements, and LP Tunes carries a
large stock of Jico styli.

I’m curious, and probably ignorant, but why would archvists be using narrow spherical sylkii that track at 4 - 5 grams? I would consider these record wreckers! They are for DJs in clubs, not delicate transfer of precious recordings…

… Unless they are for worn or difficult to track records.

I found that JICO makes a decent stylus as well. That said, I find them
to be a bit harsher sounding than the (no longer available) original
stylus. This is particularly true of their elliptical styluses which
seem to point out every possible flaw with the disc. However, that can
also be a good thing.

Still, my favorites are those made by Expert Stylus.

Hi Lou,

Not sure about the 4-5 grams (which seems like a lot!) but, different
size styli are very handy for things like avoiding the wear pattern on
wide groove discs. One does not have as many choices when it comes to
micro groove discs but different sizes can help there too. Different
shapes can help as well. It's all about getting the best possible result.

At some point, you need to sum the two channels to mono to cancel the opposite-polarity noise component.

Corey, I undertand fulle about stlus size, and have several carts to choose amongst myself. But a recommended pressure of 4-5 grams implies a low compliance, which is the part that would concern me… Perhaps it would track well at lower pressure, I don’t know. I have everything from 0.5 to elliptical .9 mil, but I never track above 2 grams.

I was just wondering!

Very true, and that can also be done post the preamp or in the DAW
where if necessary, small gain changes can be made to optimally cancel
the noise component.

First, select one channel by double clicking near the bottom of the right channel display, or near the top of the left. Then, go to the Process menu and click on Invert/Flip.
