Well, at some point a cataloger may have thought they were the same :) Those related works seem to be based on what’s in bib records. The resource identified by http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr98013681 is apparently a pseudonym of someone named Oen Hong Sen.

Given that there’s a long tail to bibliographic description (with a smaller number of creators being more prolific than the rest), I think it’s more likely to save the cataloger’s time if the nodes with the greatest weight are ranked first (it’s tricky when you try to account for variants, though—as in my example, where the original Madonna gets ranked first).

The funny thing is… I think http://id.loc.gov/rwo/agents/nr98013681 (Madonna) and http://id.loc.gov/rwo/agents/n84156128 (Madonna, 1958-) are the same. Based on the related works, they are both the Madonna who keeps putting out pop hit after pop hit.

I’d argue that if the cataloger supplied only “Madonna” the one without 1958 should come up first. And not just because she’s ageless. :)

That said, I take your point… in QA, Madonna, 1958- should come up sooner than it does.

Thanks for the suggestion, Steven, I’ll try that. However, the first result listed in your example is not Madonna, 1958- [http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n84156128] :)

I just switched to the Library of Congress Z39.50 endpoint for personal names—OCLC doesn’t seem to support non-Latin characters for variants. Now I get Madonna, 1958- as the second result.

I’ve been thinking of adding a QA option to the form as well to allow users to query QA directly and set the maximum number of results. Part of the problem may be that results are just not being sorted and filtered adequately before being presented to the user in Sinopia.

Best,

Tim

To make this an apples to apples comparison, I think you’d want to compare the relevancy between OCLC’s person, corporate body, conference, etc. indexes… with QA subauthorities, e.g. https://github.com/LD4P/sinopia_editor/blob/f7ee1190f87ee8870fd1158cab165f53f9089eaf/static/authorityConfig.json#L475

I’m noticing *some* LCNAF searches would perform better in Sinopia if the "LOC all names (QA)" (which includes Name/Titles) wasn’t used in the profiles.

Here’s the result when searching Madonna in person names only in Sinopia:

Not to be an apologist, QA/Dave definitely still has some work to do with relevancy, diacritics, special characteristics, etc.

Thanks for sharing these results, Beth. This is very helpful.

For lookups, I’ve been exploring a temporary workaround intended to minimize frustration during the initial stages of our cataloging work at Yale.

The workaround is an alternative search form that uses the OCLC Z39.50 authorities service to do direct lookups. Relevance seems to be better that what QA is able to offer at present. For example, if you execute the prefilled search for “Madonna,” the result for the pop star is first in the list.

I’ve included some basic information about the tool, but if others are interested in setting up a similar service, feel free to get in touch.

All best,

Tim

Dear Cohort Catalogers,

As I have been working with Sinopia, I have been trying to figure out the logic of QA look-ups and why sometimes searches don’t give the results that one would expect.    I’m sharing the attached document with screen shots in case in might be helpful to others learning to use Sinopia and QA.

Also, I would love to see tips from others!
