SUBJECT : BARD Express Updates
NLS is pleased to announce the latest updates of BARD Express, the system that allows NLS patrons to download materials to their home Windows-based computer for replay on the NLS digital talking-book machine. These updates will be available on January 7, 2020 and will bring many features to NLS patrons, providing new ways to discover even more of the national collection of books and magazines.
Here is the list of the new features, along with the associated key commands, available in this beta release:
Public or Private:
Previously, BARD Express always remembered the username and password last used to sign in. Libraries and other organizations that want to host BARD Express on public, shared computers can now choose the Public option during installation. If Public is selected, the program will not retain user credentials after the program is closed or after it is left idle for 5 minutes.
Individuals who want BARD Express to continue to remember their username and password on their personal computers should choose the Private option during installation.
Choosing Your Preferred Format:
You can now tell BARD Express your preferred format. Once you specify a format, the software will display only audio or only braille titles. You can specify both formats if you prefer to see all available options.
BARD Express can now search for, download, and copy braille books and magazines to an external storage device for reading on the go.
You can add two new column types from the options under Column Configuration: Format and Date Added. Format lets you know if the book is braille or audio. Date Added informs you when a title was added to BARD.
Back One View: Escape
The Escape key now returns you to the previous view. For example, perhaps you were viewing Recently Added Books and Magazines and opened the book details page of a title that sounded interesting. After reading the details, you decided that book was not for you. Press the Escape key to return to the list of Recently Added Books and Magazines.
Manage Devices View: Control+N
Typing the letter N while holding down the Control key now provides a shortcut to the view where you can manage external storage devices. This view now has a new option to eject the cartridge or thumb drive, which you can activate with the keyboard shortcut Alt+E.
Download Status View: Control+T.
Typing the letter T while holding down the Control key takes you to a new view that tracks downloads in progress. This is handy when you have multiple titles downloading at the same time.
Find Utility: Control+F
The new Find utility, accessed by typing the letter F while holding down the Control key or by selecting the Find button, lets you refine the type of material you want. This function works within any view that lists books, such as your existing Bookshelf, Recently Added Books and Magazines, Most Popular Downloads, or Browse By Subject. The Find utility allows you to specify both what text you want to search for and where the program should search for that text, using checkboxes including Title, Author, Annotation, and Content Flags. By default all checkboxes are checked, which means the program will search all fields for your text string. After you select the Okay button, BARD Express will display only the subset of books that meet your search criteria.
Note that if you have BARD Express set to display 50 books at a time in a view and use the Find utility to search for, for example, Romance, the view will now display only the subset of those books from the original 50 that include the text string Romance in one of the selected fields.
Reset Find Utility to the default: Alt+E
To return all options in the Find dialogue to their defaults, including erasing any text from the Search field, type the letter D while holding the Alt key from within the Find utility. This will close the Find utility and return you to the originating view. All titles previously hidden for not meeting the search criteria in the Find utility will now reappear.
Filter Utility: Alt+I
Typing the letter I while holding down the Alt key brings up the new Filter utility, which lets you choose to see only certain types of material. You can select either Books and Magazines or Music. If you select Books and Magazines, you can further select either Fiction, Nonfiction, or Both.
Previous Downloads: Alt+V, P, P, Enter
Users of BARD Express now have the ability to access their list of previously downloaded books and magazines. Under the View menu in the menu bar, choose Previous Downloads to see your list of previously downloaded titles. To access this list via a keyboard shortcut, type the letter V while holding down the Alt key to open the View menu, hit P twice to skip past Preferences to Previous Downloads, then hit Enter.
Subscribe to a book series or magazine: Alt+S
Typing the letter S while holding down the Alt key will now allow you to subscribe to your favorite book series and magazines for download. Locate and open a book series or magazine, then choose the Subscribe button or hit Alt+S. After BARD Express says you are subscribed to the item, choose Okay.
Please note that if you want to subscribe to receive a magazine in hardcopy braille or on cartridge, you will still need to contact your network library.
Unsubscribe to a book series or magazine: Alt+U
Typing the letter U while holding down the Alt key while a book series or magazine is open in BARD Express allows you to unsubscribe from a series or magazine. After BARD Express says you are unsubscribed from the item, choose Okay.
Please note that if you want to unsubscribe from receiving a magazine in hardcopy braille or on cartridge, you will still need to contact your network library.
Manage Subscriptions: Alt+V, S, S, Enter
You can also manage all your subscriptions from one place. Open the View menu in the menu bar using the keyboard shortcut of Alt+V, then hit S for Subscriptions. This will allow you to review all your current subscriptions. If you wish to unsubscribe from a series or magazine, open it and use Alt+U as described above.
You now access the Sort menu, which in past versions was accessed using the keyboard shortcut Alt+S, by instead typing the letter T while holding down the Alt key. To try out the new keyboard command, navigate to a list of titles such as your Bookshelf, Wish List, Recently Added, Most Popular Downloads, or Browse By Subject. After bringing up the Sort menu, explore the new ways you can sort the titles.
Note, this version supports Windows 7.0 and above.
