GeoNames is something different than the GEOnet Names Server, in spite of the confusing email address for the latter.

I can almost never get into GNS through Cataloger’s Desktop. In Chrome I get a screen that says “The webpage at https://geonames.nga.mil/namesgaz/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.” In Firefox I get a blank screen.

I was getting this message when I attempted to connect with GeoNames over the last week or so. To avoid this problem, you can access GeoNames via Cataloger's Desktop.

I have experienced the same problem yesterday and today. I normally use Firefox, which has prevented me from accessing the site altogether.

I have switched to Chrome -- it gives me a warning, but allows me to advance to the site at my own risk.

Hi Wayne et al.,

Yes, I’m getting the security warning for GNS in Chrome today, also.

Dear All,

Today when I tried to access the GEOnet Names Server all I got was a “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead” and neither Chrome nor Firefox would let me in. Has anyone else encountered this. I use this site frequently for authority work and have never had any problems before today.

Thanks for any help.
