Subject: [Non-DoD Source] Problems accessing the NGA Geonames website

Dear Geonames,

I am writing on behalf of a number of catalog librarians at university libraries -- we all use the Geonames database on a regular basis to verify the approved forms of geographic names for use in records going into our online catalogs.

For the past several days, a number of us at different libraries have been experiencing difficulties in accessing the site (URL: https://geonames.nga.mil/gns/html/poc.html), apparently because the site's security statements are out of date.

I normally use Firefox and it has prevented me from accessing the site altogether. I switched to Chrome, which gave me a warning that the site was unsafe, but allowed me to advance to the site. I understand from our catalogers' listserv that others are experiencing similar issues.

We all hope you can look into the problem and alleviate these access issues -- we rely on Geonames to conduct our work.

Sincerely,

Charles Croissant
