Jesse, This heading provoked Jeff to ask the question: Proust, Marcel, $d 1871-1922 $x Translations into German $x History and criticism But our question is about the use of that double subdivision wherever it can be used. The scope note says, "Use as a topical subdivision under names of individual literary authors, literary works entered under title and individual literatures." If the double subdivision means something different from just "$x Translations into German," what precisely is the difference? What is the $a? Or is it an abstract question? Can anyone help? Can you tell what the difference is between the subdivisions $x Translations into French, [German, etc.] $x History and criticism and simply $x Translations into French, [German, etc.] ? $v would be for the translation itself but for $x there's a specific scope note saying "Use as a topical subdivision ... for works about translations in those languages." while the longer string with $x History and criticism at the end is also established.
