Hi everyone,

I’d like to see us spending more time with this document and refining/clarifying it a bit. Input and discussion would be valuable going forward. Best, Karla

Rocco,

Valid points.

Is the LOC hosting the 12/16 meeting?

Please let us know how we can help.

Guy,

I am a little confused.  When & where were we asked to sign the agreement?  I thought that we all have various agreement dates. Does this mean all 53 agreements end at the same time?

Also, I would have liked to see the various questions from my colleagues and the answers to those questions.

I thought that this was a draft agreement which would go through various revisions with discussion taking place on our various calls.

Who is supposed to sign this agreement?  In my case, this would have to go before the New York Library Association Council at one of their scheduled meetings for official approval..  I think you should be available via telephone or zoom to answer questions that the council may have.

In the meantime, here are my comments and questions:

Seation 5 Responsibilities

This section appears to be lopsided with only 4 responsibilities for LOC and 8 for the affiliates.

In section IV I have these questions

Report semi-annually on the activities of the [State] Center for the Book to the LOC Center for the Book Program, especially those in support of the Library,

  • Why is it necessary to double our reporting?  Who besides you will be reviewing these reports?  What type of feedback will States be receiving from the LOC from our reports.  Feedback would mean 106 responses from LOC annually.

In section V I have this comment:

Participate in Affiliate Centers for the Book coordinator meetings and/or conference calls and other activities, either remotely or in person.

  • Shouldn't there be a responsibility for LOC listed.  Such as coordinate such meetings to include soliciting agenda items and sending out notices for meetings (This is currently done by volunteers but LOC as the umbrella organization should be coordinating this)

in Section VI

Contribute to the success of Library of Congress initiatives, such as the virtual and physical National Book Festival, Roadmap to Reading and other Library initiatives.

  • Should there not be some responsibility listed for LOC about this project.  One responsibility may be to provide direction in a timely way for these projects.

in Section VII

Contribute at least quarterly to the CFB Calendar of Events, which serves as a virtual home for all local CFB public events.

  • Programming varies from center to center based upon staff and funding.  I am totally opposed to having a mandate to do it quarterly programming.

Publicity

I do not understand this at all.  You provide us with an affiliate logo but are saying we must ask permission each time it is used?  I would think this signed agreement would provide us the right to use the affiliate logo and mention the Library of Congress.

I think we should spend our entire meeting scheduled for December 16th on discussing this agreement.

Sorry to run on but there are so many things that must be discussed as a group.

Thanks,

Rocco Staino

All—

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. Things are certainly very different, but there is still much to be thankful for.

Thanks to the centers that have signed their agreements. If you will be signing, please remove “Draft” from the top and send to me.

I would like to have these in place by Jan. 15, 2021.

For those of you who sent me questions, you should be hearing back from me this week. I have responded already to those questions I had answers for.

I am having a meeting this week in which I will get your other questions answered.

Some of you have raised concerns in re whether things will become more cumbersome following this agreement. In a word, the answer is no. We are simply working to strengthen the network with an agreement. As you know, the CFB network has grown over many years to reach its current 53 centers. But now that we have the 53 centers that were a goal way back when the first affiliate center came on board, it would be good for us to all be on the same page. I also hope this agreement will give you more gravitas within the organizations you are associated with and will assist with fundraising, etc.

I cannot say this too many times: Thanks for all you do to carry out the CFB mission nationally of promoting books, literacy, libraries and reading.

Best to all of you,

Guy
