Subject: a question about fictitious characters becoming name authorities
Hey guys, I don’t post often because I’m afraid of sounding like an idiot, but I have a question and I hope you can give me some guidance. Periodically we (my staff at our library) post a list of fictitious characters that have acquired name authority records. Before I can post our updated list which has nearly 200 new additions since the last time we posted it, I’ve run across a couple of anomalies that have given me pause.
In the past when a fictitious character was represented by a subject heading with an author’s name as a qualifier it was represented in this format :
150 |
__ |a Black (Fictitious character : Farley) |
(copied from sh 99001313)
When the fictitious character becomes a name authority the format becomes :
100 |
0_ |a Amelia |c (Fictitious character from Moss) |
(copied from no2015030802)
However, I have found the following that have become name authorities but have retained the format of the subject heading.
100 |
0_ |a Calvin |c (Fictitious character : Watterson) |
(copied from no2020114212)
100 |
0_ |a Franklin |c (Fictitious character : Bourgeois) |
(copied from no2020084705)
100 |
0_ |a Gerald |c (Fictitious character : Willems) |
(copied from no2020086846)
I’ve only seen them from this past year. Should they have been made in the format I indicated previously (Fictitious character from …)? Which format is correct? Are they both correct? If it’s wrong, should I correct it before I release my updated list?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
