Hi Everyone -

Please join us via webinar for our next free Department of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lecture, entitled "Enhancing the Presence of the Past: The National Park Service and the Recognition of African American History" on Tuesday, September 21st from 3:00 - 4:00 pm ET.

Prior to the Bicentennial of the American Revolution in 1976 there were only three NPS units and one National Historic Landmark that focused on African American history.  Responding in part to the social unrest of the late 1960s, as well as the democratization of how Americans viewed their heritage, the National Park Service slowly began to account for the absence of African American historic properties within its recognition and documentation programs.  Please join National Park Service Historian John Sprinkle as he charts the course of this awakening to a more comprehensive view of American history in the generation that came of age after Mission 66.
