Hi Deborah,

I would say that your library is a special library. I view academic libraries as part of universities.

A question I often have when completing surveys came up again, and this is as good a place as any to ask. I work in an independent research library. We’re not much different from a rare book or special collections unit within a university, only we don’t have a university. Are we a ‘special library’? Or an academic library? I usually select the latter because I think of special libraries as those attached to law firms, historical societies, and the like.

Comments welcome.

Subject: [PCCLIST] Cataloger Demographics Study

Dear Fellow Catalogers,

Apologies for cross posting.

While preparing a recent presentation, I looked for a study of the demographics of catalogers but was unable to find one. So I decided to do my own.

Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey (it should take no more than five minutes) consisting of demographic questions and a few task-related questions. If the task-related questions do not apply to you, your response is still appreciated. Your responses are confidential, and you are free to quit at any time.

This research study has been reviewed by the HRPP/IRB of Mississippi State University and been granted an Exemption Determination (IRB 21-449).
