Thanks for the responses so far. It may help to understand that although 'Shakespeare' is in our name, we are not a library devoted to Shakespeare, but to early modern Europe, especially Britain, and to theatrical performance. ______________________ Deborah J Leslie, M.A., M.L.S. | Senior Cataloger | Folger Shakespeare Library | 201 East Capitol Street, S.E. Yours is similar to the national Philatelic Society research library in Bellefonte, PA about 10 miles north of Penn State where I work, it is a special library with a focus on all things to do with stamps and the broader U.S. postal service. Of course, Penn State has its own Special Collections Library within the University Libraries and in that setting would be considered an academic library, one that supports student curriculum as well as research needs. I work in an independent research library. We're not much different from a rare book or special collections unit within a university, only we don't have a university. Are we a 'special library'? Or an academic library? I usually select the latter because I think of special libraries as those attached to law firms, historical societies, and the like. Comments welcome. ______________________ Deborah J Leslie, M.A., M.L.S. | Senior Cataloger | Folger Shakespeare Library | 201 East Capitol Street, S.E. While preparing a recent presentation, I looked for a study of the demographics of catalogers but was unable to find one. So I decided to do my own.
