I would concur that Folger is a special library. "Research library" was not a choice, so I'd go with special library.

I love your library, by the way! One of these days, I'll have to actually spend some more time there; I've only ever had the time to walk in and visit the gift shop.
I'd consider any library that is dedicated to something specific to be special, but that is my personal opinion. For example, our library system is academic, but we also house the
Grant Presidential Library, which I would consider a special library within an academic system.
I'm interested to hear what other people think, though, because I agree that the definition is far from clear.

A question I often have when completing surveys came up again, and this is as good a place as any to ask. I work in an independent research library. We’re not much
different from a rare book or special collections unit within a university, only we don’t have a university. Are we a ‘special library’? Or an academic library? I usually select the latter because I think of special libraries as those attached to law firms,
historical societies, and the like.

Apologies for cross posting.
While preparing a recent presentation, I looked for a study of the demographics of catalogers but was unable to find one. So I decided to do my own.
Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey (it should take no more than five minutes) consisting of demographic questions and a few task-related questions. If the
