NLS Operations Alert

No. 21-81

DATE : December 1, 2021
TO : Network Libraries
FROM : Meredith Beckhardt, Network Services Section
SUBJECT : PICS passwords

In response to LC security requirements, PICS<https://nls.us.baesystems.com/pics.html> passwords that were last changed in December 2020 will need to be changed after Thursday, December 9, 2021.

After December 9, the first time that an account attempts to log in to PICS, a reset password request will appear on the screen. Listed below are the parameters for the new passwords:

  1. Ten characters or more, consisting of the following mix:

* One or more uppercase letters

* One or more lowercase letters

* One or more numeric characters

* One or more symbol characters (excluding spaces, tabs, or non-printing keys)

  1. No repeated characters, including repeated letters that mix case (e.g., AA or Aa)
  2. Last five passwords cannot be re-used
Some other features include:

* Accounts will be locked for fifteen minutes after five unsuccessful tries on the same day.

* Passwords will expire in 365 days, with a 30-day notification. For instance, if you changed your password in July 2021, then you will not need to change your password until July 2022.

NLS recommends that each library designate a person before the December 9 switchover to be responsible for creating a new password and communicating it to the staff.
