Sami, I have devices capable of 32 bit float. but haven't used it that
way yet. One day I shall experiment.  

However, it seems to me that you are comp;icating the transfer process.
Transferring analog tape is not that difficult as for level setting. I
use a standard test tape and set it so that the digital calibration
reflects standard tape levels, and the resulting 24 bit 96k level shows
exactly how the analog tape was recorded, with never an overshoot, and
level changes can be made in the digital realm. When needed, I can set
the tape deck output to reflect standard levels, such as +4 = -12 dBFS
or whatever calibrations you prefer, if the tape is overmodulated or at
+9 etc. 

Life is much simpler that way! 

Sometimes I will normalize the digital recording to max -6 dBFS and
things always come out in a normal way. Tapes recorded at low levels
show as low in the digital realm, and can be corrected at high
resolution before it goes into the archive or further production.

24 bit seems very sufficient to me, unless you are recording live music
sources...
