NLS Operations Alert
DATE : July 19, 2022
TO : Network Libraries
FROM : Stephen Prine, Assistant Chief, PNE
SUBJECT : Requests for NLS visits in FY 2023
NLS has been advised that unless conditions change, Library of Congress staff may travel for business in FY 2023. However, the pandemic travel hiatus has led the Library to re-evaluate its travel policy. As a result, a higher level of justification will be required for NLS to consider visits to individual network libraries. Information required includes a description of the event, the name of the NLS representative being requested, how NLS will participate in the event, a draft agenda with dates and times, and whether the event will feature other speakers and representatives. If applicable, please include any additional opportunities for NLS to meet agency stakeholders or attend other events. Libraries can enhance the likelihood of having section heads, division chiefs, special assistants, senior advisors, and the directors attend unique programs, conversations, and celebrations by assuring a full agenda for the trip, i.e. meetings with patrons, state library officials, meet and greet events, etc.
If you would like an NLS representative to attend an event at your library between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023, please complete the attached form and return it to Steve Prine at
[log in to unmask]. The deadline for returning the form is July 29 if the event is between October 1 and December 31, 2022, and August 12 if the event is after January 1, 2023. Provide as much information as possible about
the type of visit desired. Please note:
A request for a visit does not automatically mean a visit will be approved.
Libraries may request in-person or virtual visits, or a combination of the two. Please avoid requesting in-person visits in October, as the fiscal-year budget transition makes October a difficult month for NLS staff to schedule travel.
To accommodate as many libraries as possible, some training might only be offered virtually in FY 2023.
Unfortunately, funds do not permit us to make consultant visits to subregional libraries or outreach and advisory centers.
