UPDATE, REMINDER

Early December is the deadline for applications for
State Librarian in New York State. John O'Rourke,
chair of the Search Committee said, "It's important
that we have a field of candidates that will produce
an excellent leader for library services throughout
the State."

The search team will meet during the second week of
December. Review of applications will go on during
December, and interviews are expected in early
January. The search team is hoping to be able to
recommend up to three candidates to Carole Huxley,
Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Education, by the
end of January.

Mrs. Huxley pointed out that contrary to many other
states, the State Librarian in New York State serves
under the non-partisan Board of Regents rather than
a political appointee. New York State, Mrs. Huxley
stressed, provides a career opportunity for a
library leader. Not only does New York State provide
some $83 million in State aid to libraries and
library systems and support the largest State
Library in the nation, but library opportunities
range from guiding and assisting the smallest
libraries to working in a collegial relationship
with comprehensive research libraries. The New York
State Librarian also helps to set the national
agenda for library services.

O'Rourke urges interested individuals to apply.
Those with questions may call Carol Huxley at (518)
474-5976 for further information or to discuss
details. A copy of the announcement for the
position follows.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT:

New York State Library
STATE LIBRARIAN
LOCATION: Albany, NY
SALARY: $90,000's

The New York State Board of Regents and Commissioner
of Education seek to fill the position of State
Librarian to lead operations of the NYS Research
Library and Division of Library Development. The
candidate will demonstrate vision and capacity to
execute policy for library service in a rapidly
changing information management and electronic
environment, to operate within a complex political
atmosphere and work collaboratively with diverse,
often divergent, interest groups.

Supervising the Director of the Research Library and
Director of Library Development, the State Librarian
will have oversight for a major research library and
administration of nearly $90 million in State and
Federal aid. The incumbent will recommend legislation
for the Regents to present as proposals to the
Legislature, regulations to govern the operation of
State-aided library programs, and policies to move
library service to higher levels.

The Research Library is the only State library which
is a member of the Association of Research Libraries.
It is the State Law, Legislative Reference and Medical
Library and serves the government, people and
libraries of NYS through on-site and remote print and
electronic resources. It is also a Federal Depository
and Patent Library, responsible for the acquisition,
distribution and maintenance of NYS documents and is
a regional library for the visually impaired.

The Library Development Division provides leadership
and assistance through State aid for public, school,
academic and special library services. The Division
develops new programs to meet new needs and reviews
and revises established programs and processes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess a
fifth year degree from an ALA or NYS accredited
library school plus at least 10 years of broad and
increasingly complex experience such as director of a
major library system; director of a comprehensive
university or research library; or responsible
management position in a State library agency or large
public library and/or similar related professional
experience. Candidates must have been active
nationally, be able to communicate a vision of library
services for the 21st Century and have a collaborative
leadership style.

Review of applications will begin DECEMBER 1, 1996 and will
continue until a candidate is selected. Please send a
resume and letter of interest to:
