                                        Shreve Memorial Library
                                         PROFESSIONAL VACANCY
                                      Genealogy Librarian (Librarian II)
                                Assistant Special Collections Librarian

SUMMARY:  Under the supervision of the Special Collections Librarian, this
individual would be responsible for a variety of duties including
scheduling personnel and ordering materials particularly those materials
required by the Genealogy and Louisiana Collections.  (See note below).

                                        REQUIREMENTS
Must possess an ALA-accredited Master of Library Science (MLS or MLIS)
degree; course work and/or experience in special collections is preferred.

Must demonstrate the ability to:
        *  handle both routine operations and long-range planning.
        *  work well with the public and other staff.
        *  supervise, train and evaluate support staff.
        *  schedule department staff and work flow for maximum effectiveness.
        *  communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
        *  develop balanced collections of materials.
        *  keep detailed records currently and accurately.

                                        GENERAL DUTIES
*  Provides assistance to patrons of all ages with answers to "reference"
questions (relating to all collections in the department) and with help in
locating materials.
*  Oversees daily activities; assigns tasks; coordinates work flow.
*  Coordinates with supervisor regarding major departmental decisions.
*  Have the ability to use various computer programs and databases,
including CD-ROMs.
*  Must be able to work one weekend a month and one evening (until 9:00
p.m.) a week.
*  Performs other duties as assigned.
*  Responsible for assisting with planning and implementing move of
Genealogy Department to the new Broadmoor Branch (move scheduled for mid-
to late 1999).
        NOTE:  This position will transfer to the new Broadmoor Branch (when the
Genealogy       Department moves there) and come under the supervision of the
Branch Manager.
