HEAD, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS --COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON, CHARLESTON, SC

Major responsibilities: The Head, Special Collections provides leadership
and expertise in the areas of collection development, processing, access,
and preservation of rare books, manuscripts, records, maps, prints, and
College archives.  The Head is responsible for budget and management,
planning, and staff development for the unit.  Other duties include
supervision of the College archivist, the Curator of the Jewish Heritage
Collection, and student workers. The Library's primary collections relate to
the history of South Carolina, the College of Charleston, the South Carolina
Jewish community, and natural history with an emphasis on ornithology.   The
Head, Special Collections will provide some hours of general reference and
serve as a liaison for collection development to one or more academic
departments.

Requirements: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent; three years of professional
experience with rare books, manuscripts, or archives; reading knowledge of a
foreign language; evidence of a strong public services orientation.  Strong
management, analytical, and planning skills.

Desired: Familiarity with South Carolina history/literature, and appropriate
computer applications.

Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston has been designated a national
landmark.  To accommodate growing collections and electronic services for
10,000 students and 400 faculty, the College is building a new library.
