Subject: Archivist: Southwestern Writers Collection

                          Albert B. Alkek Library
                     Southwest Texas State University


RESPONSIBILITIES:  Responsible for arranging, processing, and describing
collections containing personal and literary papers, film, video, sound
recordings, artifacts, ephemera, and other formats.  Develops and
implements policies and procedures for the conservation and preservation of
materials. Assists in providing reference services and conducting tours.
Works with the Special Collections Cataloger to coordinate the cataloging
of processed archives.  Supervises library assistants and student workers.
Reports to the Curator, Special Collections.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited master's degree with a
concentration in archives;  working knowledge of standard archival
principles and practices including APPM, MARC format, and AACR2 cataloging;
knowledge of preservation methods.  Desired: Knowledge of Texas and
Southwestern literature, history, film, music, art, and culture; previous
archival experience; reading proficiency in Spanish; strong microcomputer

SALARY & BENEFITS:  $2,157+ monthly commensurate with experience. Benefits
include monthly contribution to health insurance/benefits and a choice of
retirement program.  No state or local income taxes.

ALBERT B. ALKEK LIBRARY:    Holdings of the Alkek Library
(  exceed 1.1 million volumes.  The library is a
selective depository for U.S. Government and Texas documents, and is a
participant in TexShare. Access to physical and electronic collections and
other bibliographic resources is available through the DRA automated
library system and other online, CD-ROM, and Internet interfaces.  The
library staff is dedicated to providing high quality services and resources
to support the university's teaching and research programs.

SOUTHWESTERN WRITERS COLLECTION:   The Southwestern Writers Collection
( was established
in 1986 when Bill and Sally Wittliff of Austin donated a selection of their
personal collection of manuscripts, photographs, paintings, and memorabilia
of Texas authors and artists to the university.  The growing collection
springs from the vision of writers, artists, photographers, publishers, and
collectors of the region who have generously donated a vital body of
original work. The literary papers of over thirty writers are represented
in the collection. The Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican
Photography was dedicated on the tenth anniversary of the Southwestern
Writers Collection.

SAN MARCOS & SWT:   Southwest Texas State University is located in San
Marcos (, a scenic river community on the
eastern edge of the Texas hill country between Austin and San Antonio.
SWT has grown from a small teachers college to a comprehensive university
with an enrollment of more than 21,000 students offering undergraduate and
master's level instruction, as well as doctoral programs in environmental
