POSITION

REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN

APPOINTMENT DATE:  JULY 1, 1998

DUTIES:

Provide information service to library patrons using traditional
printed resources, online databases, CD-ROM resources and the
Internet; maintain the library's Web pages; plan for and provide the
library's instructional program, including the development of library
teaching materials, both in print and multi-media; consult with
teaching faculty and library staff in planning and developing class
assignments involving library use; aid in evaluation and development
of the library reference collection; prepare records/statistics
concerning library instruction and reference transactions; assist in
preparation of specialized bibliographies; supervise Public Services
Clerk; work 44 weeks including 1 night per week and 7-8 Saturdays per
year and during the summer when school is in session.

REQUIREMENTS:

MLS from American Library Association accredited library school;
computer skills, including design of Web pages and use of
presentation software, such as Powerpoint; good communication skills;
customer service-oriented experience; experience with electronic
reference databases and Internet; ability to work with diverse
clientele; ability to work as a member of a team; capable of moving
around the library to assist patrons; willingness to learn new
technologies.

PREFERRED:

Work experience in an academic library in the reference area;
teaching or training experience; familiarity with automated library
systems

SALARY:  $26,000.00-$28,000.00

STATUS:  Faculty appointment

CLOSING DATE:  Screening will begin on May 15, 1998 and may continue

THE LIBRARY:

The Jackson State Community College Library is the center for
research and study on campus.  The library's holdings include 55,000
books, 400 periodicals, and over 1000 video and audiotapes.

The library uses many electronic resources, including EBSCOHOST
MASTERFILE 650, SIRS, FIRSTSEARCH, ERIC, CINAHL and NEWSBANK.  The
automation system utilizes DRA.  There is full Internet access in the
library also.  The library also maintains a Learning Resources Center
at two off-campus centers.

There are four professional librarians and four paraprofessional /
clerical staff

THE CAMPUS

Jackson State Community College is an accredited public,
non-residential institution which emphasizes open admissions.  It
offers quality instructional programs and comprehensive student
support services to meet the educational, career training, personal
enrichment and community economic development needs of a 14-county
service area in West Tennessee.  There are career programs in
business / computers, health sciences (including nursing) and
engineering technologies. as well as a curriculum  in university
parallel.  The student enrollment is 3,600 (2,300 FTE) and there are
97 on the faculty.  The campus has full Internet access and its web

THE JACKSON METRO AREA

Jackson is located on Interstate 40 in Western Tennessee, 129 miles
west of Nashville and 87 miles east of Memphis.  With an area
population of 100,000, Jackson is one of the fastest-growing cities
in the nation.  In addition to Jackson State Community College, the
city is served by three other institutions of higher education:
Lambuth University, Lane College and Union University.  Jackson
enjoys some of the amenities of a larger city, such as a local
symphony and other arts groups, ample shopping, and a new
professional baseball team.  The industrial base includes well-known
companies like Delta Faucet, Procter and Gamble, Van de Kamp and
Maytag.
