Dear EAD folk,

In converting my "see" and "seealso" references from beta to version 1,
I've been trying to understand when extended linking is appropriate. Am I
correct in believing that both simple "see" and "seealso" references would
be tagged <c02><unittitle>Flying buttresses <ref target="goth1"
show="embed" actuate="auto">See also Gothic revival</ref></c02>?

I've got a nice set of three-way references that seem to illustrate the
usefulness of extended pointers. In the Arnold papers, the beta encoding
was:

<DSC TYPE="IN-DEPTH"><HEAD>Container List</HEAD>
...
<C03><DID><UNITLOC LOCTYPE="CONTAINER">3</UNITLOC><UNITLOC
LOCTYPE="CONTAINER" CONTAINERTYPE="REEL">3</UNITLOC><UNITTITLE
ID="sextant1">Nov.-Dec., trip to Sextant Conference, Cairo, Egypt-Tehran,
Iran  <REF TYPE="SEEALSO" TARGET="sextant2">See also Container 163, same
heading</REF> and <REF TYPE="SEEALSO" TARGET="sextant3"> Container 202,
same heading</REF></UNITTITLE></DID></C03>
...
<C03><DID><UNITLOC LOCTYPE="CONTAINER">163</UNITLOC><UNITLOC
LOCTYPE="CONTAINER" CONTAINERTYPE="REEL">163</UNITLOC><UNITTITLE
ID="sextant2">Sextant Conference, Cairo, Egypt-Tehran, Iran, Nov.-Dec.
1943  <REF TYPE="SEEALSO" TARGET="sextant1">See also Container 3, same
heading</REF> and <REF TYPE="SEEALSO" TARGET="sextant3"> Container 202,
same heading</REF></UNITTITLE></DID></C03>
...
<C03><DID><UNITLOC LOCTYPE="CONTAINER">202</UNITLOC><UNITLOC
LOCTYPE="CONTAINER" CONTAINERTYPE="REEL">203</UNITLOC><UNITTITLE
ID="sextant3">Sextant Conference, Cairo, Egypt-Tehran, Iran, 1943  <REF
TYPE="SEEALSO" TARGET="sextant1">See also Container 3, same heading</REF>
and <REF TYPE="SEEALSO" TARGET="sextant2"> Container 163, same
heading</REF></UNITTITLE></DID></C03>

Using <ref> and <refloc> in version 1, the correct tagging seems to be:

<C03><DID><CONTAINER TYPE="BOX">3</CONTAINER><CONTAINER
TYPE="REEL">3</CONTAINER><UNITTITLE
ID="sextant1">Nov.-Dec., trip to Sextant Conference, Cairo, Egypt-Tehran,
Iran  <LINKGRP><REFLOC TARGET="sextant2">See also Container 163, same
heading and </REFLOC>
<REFLOC
TARGET="sextant3">Container 202, same
heading</REFLOC></LINKGRP></UNITTITLE></DID></C03>
...
<C03><DID><CONTAINER TYPE="BOX">163</CONTAINER><CONTAINER
TYPE="REEL">163</CONTAINER><UNITTITLE ID="sextant2">Sextant Conference,
Cairo, Egypt-Tehran, Iran, Nov.-Dec. 1943 <LINKGRP><REFLOC
TARGET="sextant1"> See also Container 3, same heading and</REFLOC><REFLOC
TARGET="sextant3">Container 202, same
heading</REFLOC></LINKGRP></UNITTITLE></DID></C03>
...
<C03><DID><CONTAINER TYPE="BOX">202</CONTAINER><CONTAINER
TYPE="REEL">203</CONTAINER><UNITTITLE
ID="sextant3">Sextant Conference, Cairo, Egypt-Tehran, Iran, 1943
<LINKGRP><REFLOC
TARGET="sextant1">See also  Container 3, same heading and</REFLOC><REFLOC
TARGET="sextant2"> Container 163, same
heading</REFLOC></LINKGRP></UNITTITLE></DID></C03>

Does anyone else have a different read on how to use these elements?
Thanks much!
