Thank you, Paul.
This Wiki entry is reasonably accurate, but omits much from popular culture. But the Cream of Wheat ad is certainly not from 1893.
There is no direct evidence that (as it claims) the figure of Rastus was a standard fixture in Minstrelsy.
There was a young black man (entertainer) named Al Hanson who did use "Rastus" as his middle name (beginning in 1887); it would be nice to have his birth and/or date of death but he is absent from 'Monarchs of Minstrelsy.'
BestAllen
Allen Koenigsberg
allenamet@aol.com [...]

Don't use a regular oven to bake tapes. You must use a dry heat, which means an ELECTRIC convection oven or dehydrator. Remember that gas gives off moisture when it burns, so a gas oven is out of the question. Gas may actually make the problem worse. Convection is necessary because you want to keep the air moving, and it must be electric. [...]

Using a regular oven isn't a good idea because the temperature needs to be
constant. Regular ovens warm up and cool down. Dehydrators are designed to
do just that - Dehydrate. In other words remove the moisture, which is
what you need. Moisture can't escape a regular oven brilliant well, whereas
dehydrators have a constant flow of air to draw it away. Go back to your
food Dehydrator see if that helps. [...]
